FACELIFT FOR GMC: The State cabinet approved the construction of a medicine block, library and an auditorium with landscaping and parking facilities at the Goa Medical College Hospital Complex, Bambolim. These infrastructural facilities are in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the Medical Council of India in view of the minimum requirements for 100 MBBS seats annually in GMC. (GT)
FISHING BAN VIOLATION: The registration licences of 35 fishing vessels have been suspended for a period of one month and hefty fines imposed for blatant violations of the ban on fishing imposed during the monsoon season last year. (H)
WOMAN SETS HERSELF ABLAZE: Mumtaj Bi, a 23-year-old housewife from Zopadpatti-Baina, allegedly attempted to commit suicide on Sunday (Feb 23) night, by setting herself ablaze, when her husband came home drunk. (H)
VANESSA IS QUEEN MOMO: The Panaji Carnival Committee and the Directorate of Tourism, besides presenting King Momo's float, will also present Queen Momo's float at the parade on 1 March in Panaji. This year, the Queen Momo will be 19-year-old Miss Vanessa Rodrigues, a Polytechnic student, from Candolim. (GT)

MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: Prabhakar Gaonkar, a 45-year-old male servant at Vastawada-Curchorem, is believed to have committed suicide by hanging himself to the roof of a cowshed on Sunday (Feb 23) night. (H)
"BUDGET WILL BE COMMON MAN-FRIENDLY": The State government will seek to consolidate its various schemes during the ensuing financial year 2003-2004. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said attention would be paid to strengthen the schemes already in force. Guidelines will also be issued to various departments pertaining to their expenditure patterns through the year, so as to ensure better flow of resources. (GT)

"DHIRIO" AT ORLIM: It was a cat and mouse game between the police and two bull owners, who were hellbent on matching their bulls. On Sunday noon in the village of Orlim (in Salcette), two bull owners decided to have "dhirio". Public gathered, but as it was about to start, police made their appearance. Discreetly word was passed to shift the venue. So the public dispersed only to gather at the decided site, where too the police appeared. The crowd again dispersed to gather at a third place to watch the bulls goring each other, and this time the police had no clue about it. (GT)
MOTORCYCLE ROBBERS ARRESTED: Two persons, who had stolen two motorcycles and sold them by preparing forged documents, have been arrested by the Mapusa police. The culprits are Mainardo D'Souza of Assagao and Hemant alias Shabi Chodankar of Carona, Aldona. (GT)
ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCES: The former director of the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology, University of Bremen, Germany, Prof G Hempel, said the governments around the globe should not fight for an access to the ocean oil reserves, but exploit alternate energy sources generated from wind, solar and so on. Prop Hempel was delivering the inaugural address of the 2-day international workshop on "Biogeochemical Processes in the Northern Indian Ocean", at the National institute of Oceanography. He observed that the rampant extraction of oil from the ocean bed has adversely affected the processes regulating the biological driven marine carbon-dioxide uptake, also known as "Biological Pump". RE-ASSESSMENT OF HOUSE TAX: Loutulim Gram Sabha members demanded re-assessment of the house tax at the meeting held on Sunday. They alleged that the former panchayat secretary had failed to survey the houses before assessing the same. RS.26.60 LAKH TO PROVIDE WATER: The villagers of Morpirla and Fatorpa panchayats will be provided water with tankers to meet their minimum drinking water requirement. The State government would spend Rs.26.60 lakh merely to transport water through tankers to these villages from march 1, sources said. (NT)
GOA HIT-RAKHAN MANCH RALLY: The Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch, which has committed itself to safeguard the interest of the locals, particularly the youth in the field of employment, will be holding its first general public rally at Panjim on 27 Ferbuary. This was announced by the Manch spokesman Prashant Naik at a press briefing. The Manch has given a call to all people to attend the rally and show their support for the causes it has been espousing.
