Art in Goa and in the Goan community in Mumbai JC writes: We had many Goans playing the Guitar, Violin, Mandolin, Cello and Viola. BUT, it has become fashionable to Swadeshify everything. So, now, we play the Bhangra. Even our own Emiliano da Cruz was lamenting that He was FORCED to play Bhangra at fuctions.
Hence...I cannot see HOW we can return to Goan Musical greatness. Let us never forget, the film industry in Bombay had significant input from Goan Greats. The musical scores of Shankar Jaikishan, Kalyanji Anandji & Laximkant Pyarelal will attest to it. Alas...even that music has been taken over by this Hip Hop Beep Bop! GL Responds: Thanks for responding to my ‘cry for help’ on the topic of "Art in Goa and in the Goan community in Mumbai". However since Goenkars and Mumbaiwallas did not respond, I appreciate you filing in from the Bahamas. I would assume since there was no response from the otherwise vocal native Goenkars, their answer must be in the negative to both questions. i.e. other than the Kala Academy that recognizes Goan artistic talent, we do not have a system of artistic competitions at the level of the villages and the talukas or in Mumbai as in "amchem tempar" with the "Teens and Tunes competitions". In response to your response above, all that I can say, “It has become fashionable to blame everything on Swadeshifying.” Artist and Art will and should follow the market place. Your responses suggest the market place is Bhangra. The native Goans who do not support “Goans playing the Guitar, Violin, Mandolin, Cello and Viola” either do not appreciate this music or are Pobre Fidalgos. And the phoreign Goenkars are taaaking anim taaaking anim taaaking but nat doing maach. Either way, it is time we “Goans put our money where our mouth is”. We will soon be classified as 'vodlo mouth Goenkars' who talk a lot anim bolsan ath ghaluncheak poixe caddunk, bolsam soglim polkim. Many of us are living a life of 'pobreza' and 'fidalguice' and as my mother would say "Goenkar borem vodlem Xapotam sangta" (Goenchi Mhunn'nni). ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
