----------------------- Beach Shacks ----------------------- We the residents of Baga, Calangute areas would to like to highlight the gross irregularities carried out by the tourism department and officials during the last few years when giving licenses and marking the places for shacks at Baga and other beaches in Goa.
For instance, at Baga beach sixteen shacks are given every year. Out of sixteen shacks, eight shacks are given without any draw of lots on the grounds of experience. In the process these shack runners have become permanent owners of the shacks.
Here we would like to mention that a few years ago, the High Court had given a judgement on this topic saying that nobody can enjoy government property permanently. The tourism department's decision of giving licences on experience and allowing only some shack runners to enjoy government property is wrong and against the court ruling.
The tourism department should rectify the mistake for this season by giving all the shacks at Baga beach by draw of lots only and not by manipulation of terms and conditions.
Secondly, when marking the places for installation of the shack, tourism department officials mark the lucrative places like Baga river side for the permanent shack runners.
This practice smacks of gross favouritism and corruption.It should be completely stopped. We suggest that all places should be numbered before the lots and draws are taken accordingly, i.e. the first successful lot gets the number one shack and so on.
