RUDY PAYS HOTEL BILL: Seeking to end the controversy over non-payment of the bills for him and his family's stay at a Goa hotel, Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy yesterday sent two drafts totaling Rs.2.44 lakh to clear the dues, sources close to him said. The bills pertained to the expenses during his five-day, four night stay at the Taj Exotica hotel with his family members from 30 December last year to 2 January. (GT) ROBBERS LOOT MAPUSA FACTORY: In a major burglary at the Mapusa Industrial Estate, unknown thieves entered the premises of Vinay Exports, a unit manufacturing watches. They fled with goods, comprising watches worth Rs.12,78,850 and hard cash amounting to Rs.70,655. (GT) 3 PWD ENGINEERS PENALISED: One public works department engineer has been compulsorily retired, another engineer has been inflicted with a five per cent cut in his pension for five years and major penalty proceedings, meaning dismissal from service, have been recommended against a third PWD engineer in two separate orders by the vigilance department last week. (NT) PANJIM SET FOR A MAJOR FACE-LIFT: Come September, Panjim, is going to wear a new look, with the proposed development of the city, in view of the International Film Festival in India, to be held in Goa, in December, said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The Chief Minister was speaking after laying the foundations stone for the "Panaji Beautification Scheme" at the Dona Paula Jetty on Monday. The entire project costing Rs.49 crore, would comprise of four-lane roads, facilities to rehabilitate the displaced persons, who had kiosks at the Dona Paula Jetty and several other projects to come as a surprise to the people. (H) DRAGONFEST ON VALENTINE DAY: An American Indie band, a Mumbai band and a Goan band are scheduled to rock the Dona Paula jetty on 14 February in another of Ethel da Costa's highly popular bringing-people-together events. If the Taj Mahal is the monument of love in Agra, Dona Paula is the monument of love in Goa. So what better place to hold Dragonfest, the hot and happening music event on Valentine's Day 14 February 2004, than the Dona Paula jetty itself. The bands including Dragonfly from the United States, Zero, Mumbai's hottest new band and Goa's Tidal Wave will play from 5.00 pm onwards. Entry is free. For children and the rest of the young-at-heart there will be art and fun stalls, face painters, caricature artists, clowns, valentine balloons, roses. Journalist Ethel da Costa with a string of highly successful music and cultural events to her credit, is bringing this festival to Goa in collaboration with Gigpad, Mumbai. "The ideology behind all my concerts remains the same: taking music to the people absolutely free of cost and using music to get people together," says da Costa. AGAINST MINING EXPANSION IN RIVONA: Any expansion of mining activity along the banks of River Kushavati, specially in the Rivona belt, will further undermine ecology and people's sources of livelihood and other means of survival, according to a non-governmental organisation. Kushavati Bachao Andolan has stated that in Muschcaverem, a mining company has prospected in about eight hectares and seeks to expand to the remainder of the 100 hectares of the lease it has been holding for the past decade. Twenty private doctors will be appointed in the next two weeks at the health sub-centres on part-time basis. But little did Bismark Moraes, 55, realize the 'bad-luck' factor while chasing a black cat with an air gun yesterday. Moraes was fed up with the black cat, which was creating nuisance in his kitchen almost every other day. Yesterday (Feb 9) while the creature was trying to cross the road to his house, he shot at it with his .22 mm air gun. But the pellet instead hit the road, ricocheted and got lodged in the hip of Suvarna R Dessai, who was proceeding to her neighbour's house to attending a wedding ceremony. Cuncolim police have arrested Moraes.
