>From what I know, broadband is limited to 64Kbps multiples. Hence for Rs 5K/mo, you get 64kbps, for Rs10K/mo it jumps up to 128Kbps etc. These prices are still very expensive for such limited increments in speed. Futhermore, to enjoy the true benefits of broadband, one needs to have speeds that are at least 10x higher.
As a rough figure of merit, typical broadband costs in the US are less than Rs2500 per month, with connection speeds around 20-40x higher. South Koreans are even luckier - they enjoy connection speeds that are as much as 300x higher. Still, the recent price reductions in Goa are a positive sign which are in effect a 50% reduction in prices from a year ago. Prices had been stuck at the Rs 10K/64mbps for over 2 years and quality was not all that great either. In fact from our experience in Goa there were frequent cases when dial-up performed better than dsl or cable. Given that dsl prices in Banglore (and probably in other metros) are around half the current rates in Goa, we will hopefully see rapid downward drifts in these rates in the near future. Given the remarkable decrease in phone rates in India, I am pretty hopeful that the same will apply in this case sooner than later.
