Thalassemia is indeed a genetic disease - a blood disorder caused by genetic defects in the hemoglobin. It was first described in 1925 by Cooley, as Jose said, not 10 years ago as Afra says. 15 million years ago there were no human beings in Greece or anywhere else, as Afra seems to imply. Without Thalassemia people would not have been wiped out or "off", as Afra says. Thalassemia has nothing to do with the immune system.
