Dear Vivian,

You have raised a very important point. I cannot speak for Dan Brown but will attempt an answer.

Sexual intercourse is just one of the ways of discovering God, nirvana and self fulfillment. There are many other proven ways: Prayer. penance, meditation, repetitive chanting, hallucinogenic drugs, large donations, bull headed defense of religious dogma...We each chose our own path depending on our personal circumstances.

On a related matter, my friend Margao based researcher Jose Lourenco is in the process of 'mapping' the oral-sexual sounds of Goa. This is virgin territory which nobody has explored. What sounds escape the mouth of the illiterate fenni distiller from Bicholim when in the throes of sexual union? What does the Kunbi from Canacona utter? Preliminary findings suggest that the references to a higher power (as in "Oh god!" or "Oh my gawd! Oh my gawd!!" have absolutely no connection with religion and are only specific to some Goans for whom English is a first language. The Konkani and Marathi speakers do not exult "Hey deva!" or "Shantadurga!" or anything with a religious connotation. Jose describes one eavesdropping incident where he heard the woman sighing "Arre Ram! Arre Ram!!" but further investigation divulged that her husband's name was indeed Ram.

But I digress.

In "The Da Vinci Code" what Dan Brown refers to is the wisdom of the 'ancients'. Since then times have changed and also our understanding of human sexuality. Even in a homosexual union there is a merging of two opposite 'sexualities' (as opposed to sexes) as much as in any heterosexual union.

Regards

Cecil

P.S.
Incidentally Leonardo Da Vinci was gay.
