I am puzzled by the specific point you make that: " the large numbers of
East African Goans who brought their prejudices back with them, when in Goa
itself these same caste prejudices were on their way out". You may indeed
know more about this than I do, and I therefore hope you will find the time
to elaborate on your contention please.

Cecil:
Actually it is just my subjective reading of the situation as I know a lot of people from Saligao. I am not generalising to the whole of Goa. For example in my village of Aldona too there are many East African Goans but they don't seem to have had any effect on the caste consciousness of Aldona society.

For example there could be another village in Salcete that has a large degree of caste consciousness, among Catholics, because of a particular historical incident. It differs from village to village. In Saligao, I think, it is because of the East African Goans.

Maybe someone else has a better explanation.

Cornel:
a) I believe that those who have expressed their enthusiasm for return to
Goa from the more distant Goan Diaspora, invariably hang on to their foreign
passports and do not, (unless 'forced' to), settle for Indian nationality
which would surely be the firmest test of their intentions.

Cecil:
Interesting.

But given that very few of the Goan diaspora actually return let us celebrate those who do rather than put them through a purity test.
