Miguel, It's indeed a sad story that such a good movie as 'Aleesha' is drawing very few viewers in the theatres in Goa. When I saw the movie at Shivam in Vasco on 4th Sept, I was stunned to see the poor response. I was tempted to do a head count in the theatre. There were just about 55 people in all which included atleast around 8 children.
It's a first konkani movie that has won a National award and Goans should have been flocking to see the movie. But, sometimes our priorities are totally misplaced. Nevertheless, Rajendra Talak deserves kudos for his excellent film making talents. 'Aleesha' has a beautiful contemporary story, sleek direction, excellent cinematography besides natural acting too. The language and its script is rich. The handsome young hero in the film, Thapan Acharya is incidentally also the lead actor in Prince Jacob's yet to be released konkani film 'Padri' . After seeing the film, I personally told several of my friends that they should not miss seeing 'Aleesha' for the sheer joy of seeing a well made movie. Just three days ago I even called up a few friends in Mapusa, Saligao and Aldona telling them to go and watch the movie at 'Alankar' theatre . They were not even aware that a konkani movie is showing in town. Goans are seen complaining that no good konkani movies are being produced in recent years, but, when films like 'Aleesha' are being screened in the theatres across the State there are no sufficient viewers, not even good enough to break even the cost of the screening. So much for the love of KONKANI and GOENKARPONN. On the other hand third rate Hindi movies are running to packed houses and if one cares to see, the majority of the viewers are our very own GOENKAR BHAV-BHOINNIM. It's a high time we do a re-think on our geniune love for our language and its survival. Merely organising cultural events with food, wine, fun and fiesta does not contribute in the least to keep the language alive! It's only a day's extravanganza....nothing concrete and lasting. Perhaps, if efforts and ventures like these are supported and patronised by tru blooded Goans, we can be assured that there will be another such project in the pipeline soon. This is what will sustain the language in the long run. With the making of 'Aleesha' a complete film (minus the songs and running around the trees) konkani films seem to be scaling new heights. Well done Rajendra Talak.....a few more Talaks among us would do wonders to keep our mother tongue kicking and alive for posterity.
