Popular local artist Wilfred 'Willy' Goes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> sent in his self-introduction to the GoaWriters network -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goawriters (a network meant to encourage creative writing). He wrote: "Goawriters is a great idea, and I am happy to be a part of it. Presently I am working as lecturer in Applied Art at Goa College of Art, Altinho, Panjim. I graduated in Fine Arts (Applied Art-Photography) in the year 1986, and have been teaching since 1987. But teaching is not the only thing I was occupied with all these years. There are many other things I have tried my hand at, besides writing. I have worked as a photo engraver for The Navhind Times, as a press photographer for Navhind Times and Navprabha, I have done assignments for Goa Today, Reuters and many more (I do not remember all). As far as writing is concerned, a few of my short stories have been published in Weekender and Goa Today. I have written and directed two tiatrs ('Apa Lipa' and 'Avoi Bapaichem Rinn'). Presently I am working on my second novel in Konkani. The first novel in Konkani 'Altoddi ani Poltoddi' is in print and will be released shortly. My second novel is tentatively titled 'Khand'.... I am also a designer. I design anything from logos to book covers to anything to do with the print media, outdoor media etc. I play the guitar and I love to sing too. Specially old Konkani songs. They are wonderful. I am addicted to them. Even though I have stopped doing professional photography, I am still passionate about it, and I always carry a camera with me almost everywhere I go. I have a collection of old as well as new photographs. Well, that me. Nice to meet you." CHANGES AT THE SUNDAY MID-DAY: Jouranalist Saira Menezes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> recently said that she was moving on from being the editor of Sunday Mid-Day. QUERY ABOUT PONDA: Maglish Visser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is keen to find a website related to Ponda, and information about its town-hall. Could anyone help please? FROM THE UNCULTURED COMPANY: Tagore Almeida <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> announces the release of his 4th issue of a quarterly online magazine. Says he: "With this issue we complete a year -- our first year. We have evolved a lot, but we need to still move on. More than 22,000 people get to hear about us and that number is growing. Search the web for The Uncultured Company or Tagore Almeida, and you will see that we have made our presence felt on the web. But we need to touch the lives of more people,. we need to be the constant reminders about the beauty of life to those who need to be loved and prayed for." In the next year, Tagore and team have many plans for the magazine, and he invites others to become a part of it -- not just as readers. Says he, "Send me your articles about humanity, peace, love, spirituality and basically feel-good articles. We have to touch the lives of the people that we meet or e-meet (sorry couldn't resist that one). There are so many people who have come forward to contribute to the mag, and there's room for EVERYONE. Please do come and be a part of it." This issue is about our life. "I hope that in this one we highlight the beauty and victory of the human soul in times of fear. We look at faith, in not one but two articles, we evaluate the concept of freedom and even get round to asking ourselves as to what is wrong with smiling, and why aren't we doing enough of it. So get reading the mag at http://www.theunculturedcompany.com/magzine.html and then download Issue 4 (after October 05)," he writes. Tagore also reminds us that: Ramadan Kareem, as Ramadan is just round the corner. A time to appreciate, contemplate, give and surrender. May we all be blessed with the opportunity to do this, so that we can open up ourselves even more to the Divine being and in doing so appreciate life to its fullest. Constantino Xavier, who's coordinator of the Young GoansINT <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> reminds us of the 1st Young Goans International Essay Contest. He terms this a major event globally being organized by Young Goans International organization. This contest is for Goan youth, 15-21 years, living in or outside Goa. Its jury comprises writers Ben Antao (Canada), Ethel da Costa (Goa), Lino Leitao (Canada), Victor Rangel-Ribeiro (USA) and Wendell Rodricks (Goa). Essays are welcome, in English, of up to 1000 words, about the theme "What can I do for Goa". Submit by October 20 to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with full name, birth dates, e-mail address and phone number, and parents names. Attractive prizes donated by the jury worth over US$600 and publication of the four best essays in the weekly Goan Observer. Further details : Constantino Xavier (coordinator) [EMAIL PROTECTED] You are also encouraged to join our Mailing-list! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/younggoansinternational A RESPONSE FROM GERMANY: Rodolfo de Sousa, Frankfurt (Germany) and Chorao <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> responds to Constantino, saying: As a 70 year old, allow me to address you on a first name basis and to congratulate you and the other committee members for going into the First Young Goans' International Essay Contest initiative debut. While I'm sure your initiative will certainly have all the support, well wishes and go aheads from all Goans at home and abroad, I certainly would like to add that our young ones should not only be 'Proud to be Goans' (as the magnificent ditty/song our expat Basilio Magnus ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has written) but they should also first and foremost know who a Goan is, don't you think? So here we have two possible themes for the future: (1) Who is a Goan? and (2) Are you proud to be a Goan? along with your present 'What you can do for Goa?' By the way, wouldn't it have been appropriate or great to amalgamate your initiative to that other popular event known as World Goa Day? Regards to you all and specially to Wendell Rodricks who is doing so much for Goa internationally. Good luck! Journalist Elston Soares <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> responds to a recent piece on the media in Goa: "Great piece on the problems and challenges in the English media in Goa; but why didn't you comment on the falling language standards? They seem to going from bad to worse. The editorials in the Herald and The Navhind Times are good examples of this." ------------------------------------------------------------------- CULINARY CORNER Lamb ------------------------------------------------------------------- Moroccan Lamb With Dried Plums & Honey: Two tablespoons butter or margarine, one tablespoon vegetable oil, two-and-half pounds boneless lamb shoulder, cut into one to one-and-half-inch cubes, one-and-half cups sliced yellow onions, 1 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon, 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/8 teaspoon saffron (optional), 1 1/2 cups lamb stock or water, 1 1/2 cups (about 9 ounces) pitted dried plums, 3 tablespoons honey, salt and pepper, 6 cups hot prepared couscous, 3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds, Watercress (optional), orange slices (optional).
