Promotion of Konkani in Roman script is need of hour: Buyao
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji Nov 24: The noted Goan poet, Goem Shahir Ulhas Buyao today said that
preservation and promotion of Konkani language in Roman script is the need
of the hour.

The language in Roman script has a long history of 500 years and is more
popular script in the state as far as the demand for Konkani literature
goes, he added.

Mr Buyao, who earlier released the first issue of the fortnightly tabloid
Goencho Ulo published in Roman Konkani script, at a special function held at
T B Cunha hall, today, said that around 2.70 lakh people in the state read
Konkani in Roman script.

Fr Pratap Naik of Thomas Stephans Konkani Kendra said that the fortnightly
will be the mirror of the Goan society, while Mr Minguel Braganza said that
efforts are being made to bring out a Konkani daily in Roman script.

Mr Tomazinho Cardozo who welcomed, said that Konkani in Roman script kept
the language of the soil alive through the Portuguese regime.

“In fact, this particular script is the foundation for the Konkani language
in Davnagari script,” he observed, adding that the writers and readers of
Konkani language in Roman script had to undergo lot of difficulties,
especially during last three decades.

It is unfortunate that the government had to direct the Goa Konkani Akademi
to extend financial help as well as encouragement to Konkani language in
Roman script, he lamented. The editor of the fortnightly tabloid, Mr Joel D’
Souza proposed a vote of thanks.
