According to John D'Souza (Fenson painters) and president of the Badem Confraria, the statue was originally valued at Rs.7500 when it was purchased sometime in 1947. The miscreants also damaged some of the statues. Police, who traced the altar cloth nearly 500 metres away with the help of police dogs, are learnt to have found some clues. It seems rather surprising that the monolith of the Catholic Church in Goa is unmoved by the series of robberies in its churches. Any other organisation would have taken up the issue with the Goa government or brought its members onto the streets of Panjim to protest government apathy. The state is duty bound to protect the life and property of its citizens. This is no longer a BJP-ruled state. Apathy, like charity, begins at home.
