What should be done for those who have no opportunity to lift themselves up
from poverty? How are
they supposed to compete "on merit" with those who have had the luxury of
several generations of
middle class upbringing and living, access to schools, and family wealth to
pursue their
interests? Specifically, how are the downtrodden supposed to gain the benefits
of society and not
suffer all its burdens, given that charity is not a long-term solution?

George
