Margao waste treatment plant to be ready in six months HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JULY 6 Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao yesterday said that the first solid waste management and treatment plant being set up in Margao will set an example for other municipal councils to follow. The treatment plant, he said, should be ready within a period of six months after the tender process is completed this month end. Alemao said that the new solid waste treatment plant in Margao will enable people from other parts of the State to see for themselves the scientific treatment of waste and refrain them from opposing solid waste treatment plants proposed to be set up in other municipal jurisdictions. BAINGUINIM: The minister said that the project proposed in Bainguinim would go ahead and the process for land acquisition was also on. The Government, he said has also released over Rs 1 crore for the same. Replying to opposition to the project at Bainguinim, the minister said, Let the success of the Margao plant set an example for those opposing such plants, adding further that the Government was keen on having treatment plants in each of the municipal council jurisdictions. He said, I believe each municipality should treat its own waste. After Margao, Panjim and Ponda, plans are in the offing to set up similar waste treatment plants in the remaining municipal jurisdictions. Alemao was addressing a press conference in the city today highlighting the achievements of the State Urban Development Ministry and the State Urban Development Agency during the last one year. FUNDS: Alemao told reporters today that during the last three years (2002-05) the Urban Development Ministry had surrendered funds to the tune of Rs 48 crore. He said, During the last one year I have sanctioned more than Rs 40 crore projects for development works all over Goa. It was also disclosed that a common cadre has been set up for municipal engineers and municipal accountants and plans were in the offing for having a common cadre for other municipal posts as well. Plans are also in the offing for identifying land in the North and South of Goa for shifting scrapyards out of municipal limits. Similarly, the Government has also finalized the consultant for the Panjim City Development Plan under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. Mr D Hawaldar, Director of Municipal Administration was also present for todays briefing.
