This piece of legislation criminalizes the lives of 50-100 million Indians,
including Goans, for whom the traditional institution of marriage has been

The religious undertones for this legislation, which was enacted in 1861,
are unmistakable. The British have done away with it in their own country
but it persists in their colonies. Religion permeates every sphere of our
society and unravelling it's tentacles will take more than a sprinkling of
holy water. Understanding the biological basis for our behaviour would be
much easier if the educational system was allowed to teach evolution
correctly in the way it has been elucidated and verified by several
unrelated disciplines. Unfortunately, much of it conflicts with church
teachings and so it is glossed over. This is more of a problem in
countries like the US where pseudoscientific theories like 'intelligent
design' are being proposed to ensnare and confuse young minds.
