I have always held the (some may say, simplistic) view that caste is
another name for race. And, therefore casteism ... for racism.

Goa is an obvious melting pot. We have people of different stock and
backgrounds... and this is why it is all the more important for us to
find ways to work together and stay together.

As far as the differences between Goan Hindus and Catholics go, both
come from similar backgrounds ... and virtually all Hindu castes are
represented among the Catholic population too. So it's tough to see
how differences could be at that level. Of course, there are cultural
and geographic differences. Accidents in colonial history meant people
of different religions underwent very different experiences in terms
of cultural influences. One section grew up thinking they were
European (almost... we see these debates repeatedly on Goanet) and the
other saw themselves as Indian.

Of course this divide is not entirely along religious lines!

Likewise, the Old Conquest-New Conquest geographical gap also lends
for some difference among the communities. You just need to see the
who-voted-for-which-party map after every Goa elections to realise the
differences in perceptions. Though, one might say, this line is
getting blurred with the passing of time, migration within Goa
(particularly to the Old Conquests, where most of the jobs are), more
shared experences, and growing commonalities among the younger
generation. --FN
