Today, October 31, 2006, we commemorate the 22nd death anniversary of Mrs. Indira Gandhi (1917-1984). She was one of the most efficient Prime Ministers of India and is credited with great achievements. Noteworthy among them are nationalization of banks, liberation of Bangladesh and 20 point program for the upliftment of the poor. She was honored with 'Bharat Ratna' in 1971. Mrs. Gandhi met her tragic end on October 31, 1984 when she was brutally assassinated by her own body guards.

At the January 1971 Singapore Meetings of Commonwealth Prime Ministers were renamed ‘Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings’ (CHOGM), as many member countries were then headed by executive Presidents.

The architect of the Goa 1983 CHOGM Retreat was none other than the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister.

Today, the main roads in Goa are in excellent condition, especially after the recent hot-mix treatment but these very roads were in a pathetic condition around 23 years ago except for the road from Porvorim to Sinquerim via Sangolda, Saligao, Calangute and Candolim, which received hot-mix treatment in preparation of the 1983 CHOGM Retreat in Goa, which was held at the 5-star deluxe resort – the Taj Holiday Village at the Aguada Hermitage; hence, the road came to be known as ‘the CHOGM Road.’

Besides, the Land Acquisition and widening/hot-mixing of an entire road from Dabolim via Cortalim, Panjim connecting it to the above-cited CHOGM road, there were a few other things that were carried out in connection with CHOGM. The following come to my mind:

A new airport terminal was carved out, which, though small in size, became the envy of other airports. Ever since the CHOGM retreat in Goa in 1983, tourism has grown rapidly. Thanks to the late Mrs. Gandhi for introducing Goa to the outside world through the Retreat. If today we brag about charter flights landing and taking off at the Dabolim airport, it is due to her initiative.

The Archaeological Museum at Velha Goa was extended and the entire museum reorganized in connection with the CHOGM.

Large-scale structural repairs were carried out to Basilica of Bom Jesus, Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Cathedral of the Holy See and St. Cajetan Church at Old Goa; decayed plaster was removed and provided with fresh lime plaster as per the original. Besides chemical treatment and preservation of two Canvas paintings at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Old Goa, extensive chemical cleaning and preservation works were carried out at the following important monuments: Preservation and treatment of the main altar (guilded area) in Basilica of Bom Jesus; insecticidal treatment to the back side of the main altar in Cathedral of the Holy See.

Structural repairs were also carried out to Aguada Fort.

Here are the lyrics of a Konkani song by the late Alfred Rose (1932-2003) from his seventeenth cassette which he devoted to the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi and in which he outlines her tragic death and what she did for Goa.

“INDIRA GANDHI” by the late Alfred Rose

(The year 1984 has been unfortunate to the people of India, as during this year our honorable Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, was shot dead. Dear friends, I devote this seventeenth cassette of mine in her memory):

(From Dom’s antique shelf)

Dear fellow citizens, let us not ask what the Indian Government has done for us; instead, let us ask ourselves ‘what have we done for India?’

Moi-mogan,

Domnic Fernandes
Anjuna/Dhahran, KSA
