It is extremely appalling and very disturbing that the BJP Government in Goa displaying discriminating signs of insensitivity has announced that elections to the 11 Municipal Councils will be held on November 1st which is All Saints day, a holy day of obligation for the Catholic community.
It needs to be known as to how the government has recklessly and thoughtlessly decided to schedule the polls on that day. The Constitution of India mandates that the Government should respect the religious sentiments of every community. It is therefore imperative that in scheduling any election, the government has to ensure that the day does not clash with any religious occasion of any community. The Municipal polls scheduled for November 1st must be rescheduled keeping in mind that, 2nd November is All Soul's Day, another day on which, the elections should also not be held. If the Goa government does not within seven days rectify this skewed decision to hold the municipal polls on November 1st, I would be constrained in public interest to move the Goa Human Rights Commission for appropriate orders.
