Please remember that news giving is a commercial service while newspapers are product. Every commercial product /service comes at a cost. It costs Rs 20 to produce one copy of a newspaper which has more colour pages and newsprint quality is better than the other papers as it is imported from Russia. These involve cost. On top of that there are overheads like salaries, maintainance, Transport costs, equipment, printing machinery. Traditionally, these costs were being offset by advertisement. But now thanks to growing inflation and govt steps like demonetisation and GST, the print industry too is bleeding like other sectors. So now there are four options left before the newspaper barons - a. Increase the cost of newspapers; b. Increase rate of ads; c. Raise funds through charging for supplementary services (like in this case) or d. Shut shop. Option A if implemented then there will be hue and cry. Readers who are ready to spend Rs 3000 in one day at a restaurant don't want even a Re 1 hike in prices of newspaper. Option B not viable as that will dissuade advertisers from Advertising which means loss of revenue, which is already scarce. Now left are options C&D. Now I leave it your wisdom to decide what would you like to see out of the two. You will get your answer. ------- Thanks and regards, Shashwat Gupta Ray Resident Editor Gomantak Times Gomantak Bhawan St Inez Near Vivanta By Taj Panaji Goa 403001 M: 9011074370 0832-2422701/2/3/4 On Jan 3, 2018 11:06, "Stephen Dias" <steve.dia...@gmail.com <mailto:steve.dia...@gmail.com> > wrote: Dear Readers of Herald The news is spread like fire throughout the state of Goa in this NEW Year 2018 due to changes have taken place for those who are used to go online and Herald is the paper which Goans now cannot read online from today onwards unless the payment is made as per their terms and conditions for payment procedure. This was shocking news for all of us. Most of us are used to get up in the early morning, even at 3 AM or 4 AM onwards and go to the computer to read the news but surprisingly Herald cannot be accessed if payment is not made in advance. Those Goans who are settled abroad must have also got the shocking news or jerk and especially those staying in Gulf, Canada, UK, Australia, US and other parts of the world will not get the VOICE OF GOA instantly if payment is not made, and who knows slowly other newspapers will follow the same system. This will give another jerk for Goans if all other newspapers follow the same tactics. Herald said this amount is just a peanut and it cost less than a cup of tea. Fine, I agree but how many people go for tea in restaurants/cafe's as they most of them prefer to have tea at home in the morning, but the newspapers are a usual style for Goans even before brushing teeth to see or read the paper online. The cost of newspapers in Goa is only Rs 5/- for Herald, Navhind Times, and others are still less than that. I am not surprised that this cost also will increase for all the newspapers in days to come. New Year started with a bang on Herald to read this paper on LINE which is so bad? Will the owner of Herald take it back? All the newspapers get advertisement enough and thus make their expenses well calculated. This way Voice of Goa will come down and people may not know what is happening in Goa until they buy Herald paper through their agents or stalls etc. Therefore the speed of spreading news fast will be curtailed and hence people will get used to staying home with no news till lunch break thus NEW YEAR we can say gave us a set back for those who are accustomed to reading Herald early in the morning on LINE. What about writers? why do they not get their pocket money once they write some articles or letters to the Editor? They too should be given some benefit since they waste their time and petrol cost for their bikes/vehicles, photography etc to get the news promptly to the newspapers and none of the papers so far thought of them except for their usual columnists who are well satisfied and almost same writers is been benefitted and not others. Will that trend of payment will start for these writers? Let all get their benefit of some pocket money including the owners of newspapers. Very affectionate and most considerate educator. I have fond, pleasant memories of my association with her ..She would carry weekly message from my home on her return from weekly off. I regret deeply not being able to meet her for last time on 1 Jan 2018, when she was asleep. Whenever I visited her she was warm and positive in her out look and expressions, No hurts, complaints, no self pity about her state of health. She treated everyone with respect without any airs of pride and thus earned appreciation and love of her students at Guardian Angel High School Curchorem, She did try to find a place for me as the teacher outside India and I am indebted to her for this act of her helpfulness. She bore malice towards none. She has established awards under P.C.Trust in the memory of her son and her husband. She was a generous, encouraging benefactor of causes espoused by the Trust. She was very appreciative about my penning profile of her late father and wished it to be freeze framed. She was heartbroken about the loss of her dear and loved ones, but accepted it as the will of God. She had refurbished her house and renovated it beautifully and aesthetically She was living alone now with no near, dear ones to keep her company, but was hopeful of matters continuing satisfactorily long after her absence. I shall always cherish memories of most affable and affectionate, respectful, humble teacher in my life May her soul rest in peace Nelson Lopes Chinchinim ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2018 18:51:37 +0530 From: "Gordon D'Costa" <gordon.dco...@gmail.com> To: undisclosed-recipients:; Subject: [Goanet] 44th Sub-Junior National carrom final report & photo Message-ID: <CACcYxRpToBScTTVNQ_=joxyxricgypyyjo4w_mdd-m+mose...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" *Attn editors: *please take the 44th Sub-Junior National & Inter-State Carrom Championship report & photos *TN girls Kazima, Rathika lift cadet, sub-junior titles* *Mumbai, January 5: *M. Kazima and R. Rathika, both from Tamil Nadu emerged champions, winning the Cadet girls? singles and Sub-Junior girls? singles crowns respectively in the LIC of India sponsored 44th Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship, organized by the All India Carrom Federation and hosted by the Maharashtra Carrom Association, at the Halari Visa Oswal Samaj Hall, Dadar (East) on Friday evening. In the cadet girl?s final, the 12-year-old M. Kazima brooked no opposition from her statemate S. Abirami who was unable to get going. Kazima quickly got into a rhythm and pocketed the coins with consistent regularity to score a thumping 21-0, 21-0 victory against her hapless compatriot. Meanwhile, Rathika also came up with a steady performance to dash the hopes of Maharashtra Shruti Sonawane without much of a difficulty. Playing confidently the 14-year-old Rathika did not offer her rival much of a chance to get into the match and cruised to comfortable 15-2, 20-2 triumph. There was more disappointment for Maharashtra as Nilansh Chiplunkar and Om Taware went down fighting to Uttar Pradesh?s Krishnadayal Yadav and Mohd. Areeb of Delhi absorbing contests in the cadet boys? singles and sub-junior boys singles finals respectively. The UP lad Krishnadayal held his nerves and played some fines shots at crucial junctures to overcome Nilansh 21-2, 8-14, 21-7 in the cadet boys final. Meanwhile, Mohd. Areeb encountered quite a fight on hand against Om Taware as the two shared the opening two games which witnessed a very close and exciting affair. However, in the decider the Delhi lad played at a different level and with some clever play took the match away from his Maharashtra opponent and did not drop a single point in the third to complete a 9-7, 13-18, 21-0 victory. In the third place matches, Rishita Keshri of Uttar Pradesh beat her compatriot Saumya Yadav 4-16, 19-0, 17-2 in the cadet girl?s event, while in the boys event Suraj Gaikwad of Vidarbha defeated Jonathan Bonal of Maharashtra 16-10, 20-6.
