Arundhati Roy is an author who moves in the rarified circles of Indian urban
sophisticates. She would know little of what the average Indian feels and
thinks.

Violence in India was always terrifying to those who were its victims. Given
there are an undue number of mob killings in the name of ‘Gau Raksha’ (cow
protection) now, during years of secular Congress rule there was no less mob
violence. In fact the Congress survived on it, thrived on it in rural areas.
Most of the local thugs were Congress sponsored and supported.

BJP rule may not mean a sea change in the Indian landscape, but there has been
some control in the scams which were much more frequent affairs in previous
regimes.
