We have all seen madness when unchecked, go to ridiculous paths.

Now the Indian Courts on the matter of education and jobs reservation, has gone
to one of those ridiculous places.

It’s been 72 years since the country got its independence and this nasty germ
of reservation has firmly invaded the body politic. Instead of gradually
decreasing the concept and finally eliminating it, successive governments have
let it balloon.

In a way the context of caste-based democracy in India begs the need for silly
ideas like reservations. There might have been some justification for it in the
early years to overcome the handicap of discrimination, but in the longer term
it just swallows up merit and the country gets low quality governance.

Take Air India for example. After being started by the Tatas it was run
successfully by them. At one time it was one of the world’s leading airlines,
breathing the same rarified air as other giants like Pan-Am, TWA, BOAC and the
best of the European Carriers.

Then Govt of India entered the picture and so did reservations. A similar thing
happened with nationalization of the banks. Enterprise, innovation and
competition went out the door to be replaced by inefficiency and worse,
corruption. The results are there for all to see. No buyer wants to touch Air
India and public owned banks are bleeding the economy.

Wait another decade or two for the new reservation percentages to work their
way through the system and you will find India becoming a crippled economy
instead of a booming one. All the fine youth with brains, guts and hard work
will be fleeing abroad more than ever and those remaining will be the
frustrated ones, bumbling their way through the grace of their corrupt
political sponsors or for those without them, with low morale.

Already the standards of the Civil Service elite are a telling indication and
result of reservations. Constant political intimidation deters even their
comforts of high compensation and the fear of constant transfers haunts the
careers of those with guts and pluck. To remain honest and upright, they have
to be willing to remain single or live away from their families in remote
punishment postings.

Human beings tend to harm themselves. Countries like India with foolish
policies, do too.
