The Goan side fought on gamely and went toe to toe against their fancied opponents from Kolkata, but in the end, the experience and resilience of Mohun Bagan saw them prevail over SESA Football Academy. SESA began the game on a strong note as forwards Olvin Cardozo and Kunal Salgaonkar chased the ball deep down the attacking third as the Bagan defenders were forced to play quick balls. On the other end of the pitch, the Mariners showed their quality in attack as they twice came close to scoring, hitting the crossbar on one occasion. As the game progressed, the visitors began having a strong foothold of the game as they kept the ball well within their possession, allowing a direct passage of play. It was a surprisingly hot morning weather at the stadium as the referee blew his whistle for a short break at the half-hour mark. Minutes after the game resumed, Sesa won a free kick in the attacking half but Joston Pereira’s strike scraped way over the bar. As the game was picking up a good pace, the referee pointed towards the dugouts for half time. So far, it was a 50-50 game and the scores could have turned in favour of any of the sides. However, as the second-half began, Bagan introduced several experienced players from the squad including Salva Chamorro and new signing Alexander Romario Jesuraj. In their presence, the Mariners looked more resilient on the attack but just couldn’t keep their attempts on target. In fairness, the SESA defence looked quite strong even after tremendous pressure from the opposition. Especially custodian Hansel Coelho was a standout performer on the day as he pulled off several incredible saves. Yet, the young side seemed a little vulnerable on set-pieces and at the hour-mark, they conceded a penalty through Vishnu Gosavi, who handled the ball inside the box during a corner. Chamorro, who had been on a good run so far, stepped up to take the penalty and scored cool-headedly past Coelho. Further, in a matter of minutes, Vishnu saw himself in a one-on-one situation with the Bagan keeper but his attempt took a rebound off the woodwork as he missed the opportunity to pull one back for his side. However, the Kolkatan-outfit doubled their lead in the 82nd minute, this time through Deep Saha, to put an end to the game as they maintained the scoreline until the final whistle.
