*USA take down mighty Pakistan via Super Over; Register their second
consecutive win at the ICC Men's T20 CWC 2024*

*June 7, 2024:*

The USA men’s cricket team extended a fairytale debut at the International
Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup, taking down former champions
Pakistan via Super Over to register their second consecutive win in the ICC
Men’s T20 World Cup. This third match of Group A was held here at the Grand
Prairie Stadium, Texas. USA displayed some extraordinary form after the
co-hosts tied the match at 159 for 3 against Pakistan’s 159 for 7 in the
stipulated 20 overs. USA thereafter walked away with a stunning win as
Pakistan fell short by five runs trying to top the 18 that Aaron Jones and
Harmeet Singh had put on in the super over. USA skipper Monank Patel was
awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant 50 off 38 balls.

Batting first Pakistan had put up 159/7 in their 20 overs which the hosts
matched for three wickets, thanks mainly to an enterprising 36 off 26 balls
by Aaron Jones in the end. The win puts USA on top of Group A with two wins
out of two with India having the other win in the group.

Put in to bat by Monank, the Pakistan innings began sensationally when
Steven Taylor plucked a blinder at slip of left-arm medium Saurabh
Netravalkar, to dismiss the dangerous Mohammad Rizwan in the second over.

The USA captain’s unorthodox move of opening with left-arm spinner Kenjige,
then paid dividends when he accounted for Usman Khan in the next over.

Pakistan continued to lose wickets but a 72-run fourth wicket stand between
captain Babar Azam (44 of 43) and Shadab Khan (40 of 25) ensured the former
champions set up a competitive total of 159. Kenjige was the pick of the
bowlers picking up three for 30 off his four overs.

USA in response looked set for a major upset cruising at 104/1 after 13
overs with Monank and Andries Gous well set and having put up a rollicking
68 run standoff 48 balls.

Haris Rauf then bowled Gous and Md. Amir had Monank caught behind off
successive overs to put the hosts under pressure. The experienced Pakistani
pace attack of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Rauf then squeezed the
USA, before Nitish Kumar struck Rauf for four off the last ball of the
innings to take it to a Super Over.

Amir then bowled three wides to give away 18 off his Super Over.
Netravalkar was his steady miserly self and the game took a definitive turn
when Nitish Kumar took a great catch diving forward to dismiss Iftikhar.
Shadab then could not get the 14 needed of three balls and USA pulled off a
historic victory.
