Agassaim locals catch
police by its horns!

BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, OCT 7 – Agassaim locals rallied around former sarpanch Salvador Dias
and, quite literally, caught the Agassaim cops by its horns!

The Agassaim police had detained Salvador
as a preventive measure to stop a bull-fight, but locals claimed the former
sarpanch was, quite needlessly, picked up from his Mencurem residence on the
pretext of readying his bull for a fight.

As news spread like wild fire in Agassaim, locals – numbering around 100 –
stormed the Agassaim police station, took the on-duty officials to task and
demanded release of the former sarpanch.

PI Salim Shaikh, incharge of Agassaim police station, was conspicuous by his
absence as PSI Chauhan and ASI Mohan Naik was left to face the music.

“The cops are over enthusiastic about stopping bull fights. They just pick up
anyone without any rhyme or reason,” said Zilla Parishad member Antonio
Silveira, who personally visited the police station and sat till the drama was
over.

Those in the know told this paper, Salvador
had tied his bull outside his residence. But over-enthusiastic constables,
especially after the August 10 fiasco, assumed the bull was being readied for a
fight.

Last week, three youngsters from St Cruz were apprehended at Bambolim and
arrested while they were taking their bull for grazing.

In the same case, two other arrests were made even though they were only making
enquiries.

“We do not mind if the cops slap charges against us when a bull fight is being
organized. But, they just cannot make an arrest even when bulls are being taken
out for grazing,” said Simon Caiado, former president of All Goa Bull Fights
Owners Association.

Agitated locals later got an assurance that no arrests would be made when bulls
are being taken out for grazing.
