Dears, Roland Francis can sit abroad and tell us plausible stories of what happens at Goa University at Taleigao Plateau [in village Panchayats of Taleigao, Santa Cruz and Bambolim] or any other University in Goa. He is knowledgeable. I make no such claim for myself.
I just happened to have worked for the Goa University [1991-93] on deputation as a gardener [Sujay Gupta has remembered me as a "Garden Inspector" on this list and in print], known some of the "Readers" of today when they were aged 20 something years and recruited as lecturers and do keep in touch with the Goa University ... including doing a bit of garden sponsorred by Sesa Goa Ltd. till last March. At best, it is difficult working at the Goa University; at worst one prefers to leave it and go away [like Ms. Belinda Fernandes, the sister of the more famous Remo, did about a decade ago] or be uncermoniously shown the door as one Goan who officiated as the VC was! Mr. L.M.T. Fernandes' fate as the Chairman of Goa Board of Education was "yesterday once more"! [Both these men happened to be Catholics, but that is besides the point .... we have a secular Government in place.]. I do hope Selma has statistics to back her far-reaching statement. If true, the Goa University must be congratulated for producing employable graduates who are ingrained with the intrinsic "dignity of labour" , that we preach from the pulpits and decry on any net forum. "Whited sepulchres". Did I hear that term in a similar context before? The Goa University started with senior teachers and doctoral students from its affiliate colleges/CPIR [formerly of Bombay University] filling the top posts .. Dr. S.G. Torne, Dr. Tonsekar, Dr. Olivinho Gomes, Dr. Uday Sangodkar, Dr. Urmila Barros, Ms. Savita Kerkar et al ... have been some of them. Dr. Selma Viera Velho taught at Goa University, but as a Fundacao Gulbenkian scholar, not GU employee. Would someone like to tell me the names of any Goan who has made it to the teaching faculty of Goa University in the last decade? As I have said before, I am not very knowledgeable. Dr. Anand Vishwanath Prabhudesai was the name of my senior at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, whom we knew as Uday. After his Ph.D. in Microbiology with distinctions he was given post-doctoral fellowship [not unlike Dr. Nandkumar Kamat at Goa University]. After six years of fellowship-without-employment, he left the University and got employed in USA. Perhaps, Universities in USA employ sub-standard Goan faculty. Dr. Carmo de Cruz could possibly enlighten us on this. Knowing Uday personally for six years, I would disagree. >> A good Goan University faculty member can get natural >> employment in GU or in any other Indian University. If that is the truth, I am Goanet's Fairy Godmother. Now Goans wishing to be in the Goa University's faculty are in need of one. "Mummy" Victoria has lost her magic wand. Any volunteers? Mog asundi.
