Dear Venantius et al As regards Indians easily changing names, mis-spelling names, it must be said that many did it for the same reasons why they are seeking Portuguese citizenship today, namely practical needs of life. One need not search for ideologies or patriotisms, or blame priests of Bombay! Before the independence of India, many Goans sought to pass off as Anglo-Indians. That was a door to enter the railway job, post offices, etc. Hence, Dias became Days, Lobo became Lobow, Coutinho became Coutts, etc.

I guess it had something to do with their modern proclivities, education and bringing order...
