This is what could be going on with the questioning. The questions appear to be deceptive primarily because, in such allegations, angst ( in Hindi, a kind of, veer krodh) -- there are subtexts. (It is not an attempt to deceive, but to state thoughts, which manifest in the form of questions.) Speaking of the common man -- to a large degree, it was the common man from one group, namely among the Christians, that benefited through their families in the Gulf and other places. To begin with many in these families were comfortable with movement into "known unknowns," and what is seen as sacrifices also paralleled "lack of choices" for a plethora of factors. So in many villages, there appears to be a marked contrast in the nature of the houses, way of life, etc., as well as body language and attitude between the Hindus and Christians. To reiterate, we are talking about the common man here, and throughout. Also if the Church got helped, did the temple necessarily receive similar aid. There is a point here, and my views have to be seen in the right spirit. In a civic way of seeing, this must be possible, but rearely does a person imbued in one religion permits himself to behave thus, although there are such cases. Furthermore, this is not a problem of your creation, but is part of the subtext and as such we get to hold the problem, or metaphorically, the problem has entered our mind space. The help was given by you Anthony, and your people Selma, was to ones own people (of course, all Goans). The beneficiaries were Goans as was / is Goa, and that is fair. But the arguments and frustration one encounters from the questioners, has in all possibility to do with the fact that "one side" benefited and sort of moved on -- apparently better prepared to face life abroad, and in the future. The ones who have cause to be frustrated, but cannot quite spell it out are the moderates. These are essentially good people caught between a rock and a hard place. They cannot say it as it is, for fear of rejection from their own (not yet ready to cast away moorings since it gives strength and identity), or being labeled as a sympathizer. There are others among the Christians, who were taken for a ride for their properties, etc., by those around them, but their lives have no meaning -- and are not given any value. So there are benefits and benefits of power and muscle. And some of these were moderates in the recent past. One knows this having seen and heard many instances of what was, but is now nought. Non-Christians -- and there are those who view things differently, could speak out. This is not to say they have to disagree entirely with those who question NRI, NRG contributions; but just so the angst that is felt and spoken among themselves may be better understood. But as with human behavior, one may only hope, although that would be the decent thing to do. Essentially, the early generation were people with the same basic aspirations. The Hindus who observed what was possible, and wanted a piece of the pie also benefited in their own way. Some stuck with the idea of not crossing the seas, yet others swallowed it and went to the Gulf. or other places, often on their own steam; including to study. Some Hindus received help from Christians. Also, people rarely mention they were helped, or do so churlishly as in Anthony's post, where "so what they do it as they are in the Gulf." One can do nothing about it such sentiments. We are all Goans, from various strengths and weaknesses, as humans tend to be. But perhaps, large numbers of us Goans are pretty damaged. Its a pity that those involved in the study of Communication do not contribute in such areas. venantius j pinto > Message: 11 > Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2008 21:34:43 +0400 > From: "Anthony C. L.
