He had earlier admitted to having killed two other women, one each from Shiroda and Ponda, for their money.
Ponda DySP, Serafin Dias informed that according to Mahanand’s confession, he had taken Vasanti Anant Gaude, 19, from Vadalwada Madkaim in his rickshaw on September 11, 1995 to Khandepar and killed her by strangulating her with her own dupatta. He also confessed to having thrown the body into the Opa river. PI C L Patil said that Mahanand first took Vasanti to a plantation behind the water treatment plant at Opa, but not finding a suitable place to kill her, decided to go elsewhere. He then too Vasanti to a plantation near Khandepar bridge at about 12 noon. After eating biscuits and sipping soft drinks, Mahanand snatched Vasanti’s dupatta and strangulated her. He then removed her gold chain and Rs 500 from her purse and threw the dead body into river Opa, police said quoting the accused. The PI said that after killing the women Mahanand sold their jewellery. Vasanti’s gold chain was sold the same day to a goldsmith in Ponda and the accused joined other rickshaw drivers at about 2 pm and remained at the stand till 6 pm before going home as usual, PI Patil said. Mahanand used the same modus operandi all three times and the police are searching their records for unsolved cases of missing women to determine if Mahanand may have killed any more women. Police had arrested Mahanand on April 21. -------------------------------------- Times of India (Goa) 04/5/09 page 1 -------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ---------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ---------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: goa...@bsnl.in ----------------------------------------------------------
