I, too, hold with Jeevan.

The coconut-country derivation.

Margao-region being so near the beach belt has sandy sub-ideal for
coconut growing and is, indeed, surrounded by thick, luscious orchards
of coconuts...

If derived from the 'mhar' theory, it begs the question why this people
would conglomerate in that area at all.

These ittinerant suppliers of everyday needed household items tend to
move where their services are required and manufacture the commissioned
articles in situ...

The area that became Margao of latter times was then, relatively far away
from nearest setteld communities thus hardly a lokely place for the workers
in bamboo, leather materials and carry them six-ten miles...

BTW Domnic, was the Cyril de Sousa mentioned in your grand book, your grand
opus, the same as worked for years, in a very respected position, for Air India
at Frankfurt.

If so we became great friends, introduced to him & his great pal & Cumpar,
Mariano Pereira, by Willy, in the eighties...Is he no more with us?

We lost contact since some years back, though Mariano & I have resumed it
recently.
