<<It could be from two words 'Maad' (Coconut) and 'Ganv' (village)
i.e. village of coconuts from 'Madgaon', as I guess 'Margaon' is of
recent origin.

I always wondered whether the name 'Margao' comes from two words 'Mhar' and 'Ganv' - meaning "place belonging to Mhar's".

Today, I begin a new series, ‘The
forgotten Tribe - MHAR.’ I have tried to encompass as much as I know and
recollect
about the Mhars. It is more than likely there are some aspects that may have
escaped my attention.
***The word Margao is a lusitanized form of Maddganv, probably from Matth-graham, or Matthganv, the village with a monastery (Mutt), which was at the Monte-Maddganv, which was abandoned because of omen, and on the spot the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Piedade was built. There is Maddel ward, which can be associated with "madd", "coconout grove". The form Mar-ganv was subsequently linked to "Mhar", "farazes", and also to "Maruncho ganv", "the village of spirits".
More investigation is needed.
Regards.
