He is being modest too, apart from what he has stated, he has done and is still doing a lot to preserve our Goan culture and traditions and also helps our Goan brethren. How many of us Goans would pay from our own pockets, for people to till our own land and get nothing in return ? Agnelo pays people (Goans) to cultivate his fields to sustain themselves (workers) and gets nothing in return, not even a measure of rice. He only does it to keep the tradition of paddy cultivation alive so that his fertile land stays alive and feeds a few in the process, professing his trust in the Goan worker, whereas today we do not trust even our very own. When I go shopping I always patronize our Goan vendors, there are two reasons, first I hate the very idea of going to the Gandhi market or the SPDA market complex, main reason being hygiene, I prefer buying from the central Margao market where most of the vendors are Goans, it's slightly expensive but the conditions are lot better than the Gandhi market. Mostly I buy fruits and vegetables from Goan vendors near the Telegraph Office or near the old fish market. I have fixed shops and vendors that I have been patronizing for years, the recession nor the shaky job situation has changed my perception. When I built my dream house, I too used a local contractor with local labour (Peddnem) only the marble fixer and the POP guys were from out of state, the painter, plumber, carpenter, fabricator and the electrician were Goans and they did a fine job. It cost me a bit more but it was worth it. I still use these guys when in need, the carpenter that I use is class, one has to pay for quality. The message given by Agnelo to support our own Goans should be taken up by us, in this commercialized world where even a few fils, cents and paise, pull us against our own, let's make a commitment to support Goa and Goans, to preserve and protect our culture and identity.
