This is so easy to understand!

1) The church decides to subject the Shroud to scientific scrutiny.
2) It supplies the scientist with a piece of cloth.
3) The scientist date that fabric to 1250 to 1390 AD.
4) Then church says, nananananana, you took the wrong piece of cloth.
