A nobel laureate: Laureate Lending Library alias Confidant [in Margao, Goa]
will be completing 40 years of its existence next year. With 20,000 plus
books and 8210 life memberships, Confidant still lives on. Walburg
Verissimo Coutinho gets nostalgic with Bharati Pawaskar. Quote: "I had
newly started a business of lending furniture to those officers who were in
Goa for a short duration during the early 70s. Many of my clients who took
furniture on rent for two or three years had various kinds of friendly
requests. Most of them inquired if there were books to lend too. They kept
asking me till I decided I must start a library for them. So I made a trip
to Mumbai and bought the latest releases. Confidant's Laureate Lending
Library was born in 1972. My friendly clients became my initial
founder-members. Soon locals poured in too, as this was the first library
in the whole of South Goa that offered English books," says Walburg

stay, ask around and figure out how many youth you know who read on a
regular basis, be it daily, weekly or monthly. Life has moved beyond
newspapers, books and now the internet is solely used for networking an

book a day but many like me do our fair share of reading online...."
