Is there something as a "gentler Goan era"? If so, when did that commence,
and when did it end?

I'd say that Gonzaga's dialect is closer to our own, hence the PLU (people
like us) syndrome. If we don't accept the diversity of dialect and script
within Konkani, then we're just the other side of the Devanagari coin,
imnsho. FN
