Doc,
Here in Canada, the 1st state, there lies a different set of facts and the
current conservative government has spent tens of millions of dollars on a
multi year effort to celebrate the war of 1812.

The war of 1812?

The Canadian version is that troops marched to Washington, DC, burnt down the
White House, and then marched back to Canada.

Ever since, the USA has taxed its residents to pay for the defense of Canada.

On a personal note, every year I file a US tax return. The US tax system is
based on the notion that a US citizen living anywhere in the world has to be
taxed at the exact same rate.

If any US resident is following me so far, do not read any further.

Ok, now that the US residents have stopped reading, let me let everyone else
into a little secret. Canada taxes its residents at a higher rate than the USA
taxes its residents. I pay taxes in Canada. Then I file a US tax return. The US
govt then gives me a tax refund for the higher taxes I pay in Canada.

Life is good.
