GOVT NOT TO TOLERATE CHALLENGE TO SECULARISM, PM: The Prime Minister, Mr
Atal Behari Vajpayee, yesterday said that nobody should think of
challenging India's secular fabric and pointed out that secularism is
deeply rooted in the country's rich cultural ethos. (NT)

MODI'S RESIGNATION REJECTED: The national executive of Bharatiya Janata
Party in an emergency meeting on Friday night in Panjim rejected Gujarat
Chief Minister Narendra Modi's offer to resign for the worst carnage seen
there for decades but asked him to seek dissolution of the legislative
assembly and seek a fresh mandate. The political fallout of the Gujarat
violence took centre stage as predicted at the inaugural session of the
three-day national executive meeting of the ruling BJP yesterday. (H)

ELECTORAL SETBACKS TEMPORARY: Dismissing the severe electoral setbacks
suffered by the BJP in the four North India states as a "temporary
phenomenon", the BJP national president, Mr Jana Krishnamurthy, yesterday
said that these will be rectified in the following few months. (NT)

DEVELOPMENT PACKAGE FOR GOA: Delivering his address at the public meeting
at Campal yesterday, Prime Minister AB Vapayee stated that the Central
Government would extend all possible assistance to Goa in terms of
developmental schemes, specially connecting it with other states through
the proposed superhighway. (GT)

ROLL BACK OF BUDGET PROPOSALS LIKELY: BJP yesterday gave enough hints of a
possibility of a roll back of some of the proposals in the Finance Minister
Yeshwant Sinhas's budget for 2002-2003 under attack, an issue that the
agitated even party MPs. (GT)

VAJPYAEE LAMBASTS FORCES BEHIND GODHRA MASSACRE: PM Vajpayee said the
communal flare-up at Godhra could have been averted if the innocent people
on the Sabarmati express train were not killed and warned that Islamic
propaganda through intimidation was a threat to the country. (GT)

TIRADE AGAINST MUSLIMS: It will go down in history, that it was on an
amavasya night that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee launched an
unexpected volley on Muslims and Madrasas, while addressing a public

Mahajan, started his speech by saying "Dev Borem Korum". He also wished

RIGHT TO CONTINUE: Goa's Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni, yesterday told
the division bench of the Bombay High Court at Panjim, that it is the
government's "constitutional right" to continue in office after the
dissolution of the legislative assembly. (H)

ARMY'S CONCERN OVER HUTMENTS: Army officers at Rawanfond (In Margao) fear
possible hindrance to their training activities to fresh recruits by the
teeming outsiders taking shelter in hutments near the cantonment. (GT)

ENROLLMENT FOR KONKANI MEET: The enrollment of delegates for the 23rd All
India Konkani Parishad to be held at Mangalore on April 20 and 21, has
started at the Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Margao and Panaji offices, according
to a press note issued by the Parishad's general secretary, Mr Raju Nayak.

SC REJECTS NCERT'S PLEA: Reiterating its earlier orders putting an interim
ban on alleged attempts to saffronise the secondary education, the Supreme
Court yesterday dismissed an application by the National Council for
Educational Research and Training, and also rejected the suggestion of
Solicitor General that some of the books could be released if an
independent persons like Justice PB Sawant cleared them. (PTI report on

MEDICAL REPS' STRIKE ON 16 APR: The Federation of Medical Representative
Association of India will hold a month-long relay strike of the field
workers in pursuance of 27 common charter of demands. In Goa, the field
workers would be resorting to strike on 16, 17 & 18 April. (GT)

'KIT KAT' BREAK: Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries,
Prof Chamanlal Gupta yesterday afternoon took a break from official party
work to visit the Kit Kat plant of Nestle India Ltd at Usgao. (H)

ISIDORE RESIGNS: Former Poinguinim independent MLA Isidore Fernandes has
tendered his resignation as the chairman of the Goa Construction Housing

INDIA NEEDS DEDICATED BUREAUCRATS: Speaking on the subject "In the
wonderland of Indian Babus" organised by Margao First, the State Election
Commissioner, Prabhakar Timble, said India today needs bureaucrats who will
stand for certain values like the rule of law, democracy, secularism, to
make the country a modern-day democratic superpower. (H)

PAINTINGS' EXHIBITION: "Celebration of Togetherness" is an exhibition of
paintings by young Goan painters Sandesh Kalekar and Angelo Dias which will
be inaugurated at the Galleria Lancer at Vasco da Gama today at 6.30 pm.
