GOA CHURCH IS PURELY SWADESHI: PARRIKAR: Condemning the statement made by 
Congress Observer Pradhyut Guha, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said 
yesterday that the Church in Goa is purely Swadeshi, and has contributed to 
the development of the State. Parrikar said that Guha should apologise to 
Goans for the derogatory comments against the Church made by him, and 
immediately leave the State. (GT)

STATE POLICE PUT ON ALERT OVER ARMS LANDING: For the second time in two 
months, the Customs and Goa police have been asked to remain on alert 
following intelligence reports that a ship (Saed Quadri) laden with arms and 
ammunition has left the Karachi port on 24 April. Sources aid the cargo will 
be transshipped from the mother vessel to other boats in the highs seas. (H)

DIOCESAN BOARD TAKES OVER ST ALOYSIUS HIGH SCHOOL: St Aloysius High School, 
Majorda, has been taken over by the Diocesan Society of Education and it will 
be shifted to Mazilvaddo, Benaulim, from this academic year. The decision was 
taken following the closure of the Holy Trinity High School, Benaulim, from 
the last academic year while the St Aloysius High School was on the verge of 
closing down due to lack of students. (GT)

ACUTE WATER SHORTAGE IN NORTH GOA: As the summer is kicking off, drought-like 
situations in the four talukas in North Goa districtPernem, Bicholim, Bardez 
and Tiswadiare facing acute shortage of water for the last couple of weeks. 
Water supply through tankers of PWD has been a permanent feature in the three 
talukas at present. But now it will be the turn of Panjim fringes, and 
official in the PWD said. (H)

TWO TEENAGE GIRLS HELD FOR THEFT: Police arrested Mamata Naik (18) and 
Manjula Naik (19) from their native place Kumta in Karnataka, where they had 
fled after robbing gold ornaments and clothes of their employees, Ms Jeeva

CONGRESS DEFECTORS FATE HANGS IN BALANCE: The fate of all the defectors 
aspiring for the Congress tickets will now be decided by the Central Election

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE COMMITTEE MEET: The 36th meeting of the Town Official 
Language Implementation Committee for North Goa, is scheduled to be held at 
the seminar hall of the National institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, on

BENAULIM TOPS LIST OF SENSISTIVE AREAS: The entire Benaulim constituency is 
topping the list of sensitive and troublesome areas identified by the South

HOTEL ROOM BURGLED: Unidentified culprits entered a hotel room in Panjim and 
decamped with cash and gold ornaments totally valued at Rs.1.33 lakh, 
belonging to the family of Jai Bhagwan Goel, who had booked to adjacent

ENVIRONMENT RECEIVED ROUGH DEAL: Plastics, garbage, mining rejects and 
bio-medical waste are some of Goas worst environmental problems and demand 
attention in the form of structured ecological controls from every 
government. Initially, the BJP government headed by Manohar Parrikar showed a 
responsive attitude and also took into confidence some NGOs to discuss the 
burning issues. But issues were not carried to the logical conclusion. (H)

CONSTABLES NAME MISSING IN SENIORITY LIST: Police constable SL Dhuri, 
attached to the Crime Branch, told the Director General of Police Gurucharan 
Singh Sandhu, at a Sampark Sabha at the Police Head Quarters on Friday, that 
his name has been missing from the seniority list since 1991, and that 
several reminders and applications made to the departments superiors had been 
of no avail. (H)

PMC TO RECYCLE BIO-DEGRADABLE WASTE: Clean roads and green avenues in Panaji 
does not seem like a dream as the Panaji Municipal is in the process of 
implementing a system where biodegradable waste is recycled and utilized at 
the source, through a new technique. (GT)

CREATIVE WRITING: Unfortunately, in Goa University, we dont have creative 
writing as a subject. It is very much essential to introduce creative writing 
as a subject for young aspiring writers as they are exposed to various styles 
and techniques of writing and also to the works of numerous writers. (Prakash

MASCARENHAS AWARD FOR GOMANTAK STAFFER: Former editor of The Navhind Times, 
Lambert Mascarenhas, yesterday stated that journalists should function in a 
responsible manner and with dedication towards the society. He was speaking 
as a chief guest at the presentation of the Lambert Mascarenhas award at the 
Goa Union of Journalists office in Panjim. The 2001 award was bestowed on 
Gomantak sub-editor Paresh Prabhu. Four GUJ membersJanardhan Nagvekar, Uday 
Mardolkar (both Navprabha), Avinash Vengurlekar (Tarun Bharat) and Shaikh 
Jamaluddin (The Navhind Times), were honoured on the occasion, for completing

SARDESAI MEMORIAL LECTURE: The Institute of Indo-European Studies and the 
Padmashri Vaman Sardesai Memorial Trust will jointly hold a public memorial
