CLASH OF THE NAIKS: The BJP sprang a surprise on its adversaries yesterday 
when Shripad Naik, after resigning from the Union Cabinet, filed his 
nomination for the Ponda seat to counter the threat posed by former deputy 
chief minister Ravi Naik to the party in the assembly elections. (GT)

NOMINATIONS GALORE: There are so many people eager to serve Goa and its 
population. One gets the impression judging from the fact that as many as 
280 candidates have filed their nominations for the May 30 Goa assembly 
elections. Yesterday, of course, was a virtual gatecrash with as many as 
150 candidates filing nominations.

'CHOSING DEFECTORS BY CONG WILL HELP BJP': Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar 
said that the act of the Congress Party in choosing all 'defectors' for the 
party tickets will help the BJP in the ensuing elections. Speaking to 
reporters yesterday, he said he was relieved that the BJP's rejects have 
found a place in the Congress fold. (GT)

MAUVIN CHARGESHEETED: The Crime Branch yesterday filed a chargesheet, 
accusing former Power minister and Congress Party candidate from Cortalim, 
Mauvin Godinho, for amassing wealth, disproportionate to his income. Police 
sources informed that Mr Godinho was found possessing assets worth Rs.20 
lakh, which were disproportionate to his income. (H)

NO ONE CAN STOP CENTRAL AID: MGP president Shashikala Kakodkar has 
dismissed as baseless the campaign that the Central aid to Goa will be 
stopped in the event of the regional parties coming to power. "No power on 
earth can stop Central aid to Goa. The grants are made to the states based 
on certain recommendations," she pointed out. (H)

PORVORIM YOUTH'S BODY RECOVERED: The body of 20-year-old youth from 
Porvorim, Slayden Sequeira was recovered on Monday morning at Utorda beach. 
He went missing on Sunday when he along with other friends had gone for a 
swim in the sea off Arossim beach. (H)

MINOR GIRL TRACED: A minor girl from Marcel who had eloped with her 
boyfriend on April 30, was traced at Mudgud-Hubli, by the Ponda police. (H)

MUSIC OF A DIFFERENT KIND: Metal Blast, a show where the heaviest metal 
bands are going to perform live is all set to take place on May 18, at 
Vagator beach. Besides local metal brands, "Demonic Resurrection" from 
Mumbai is also scheduled to perform. What's more appalling is the strapline 
on the pamphlet that says "Get ready to bang those brains out and get your 
souls slaughtered". (H)

CANDIDATES IN SIOLIM CONSTITUENCY: Ten candidates have filed their 
nomination for the Siolim constituency comprising of Siolim, Assagao, 
Anjuna and Verla-Canca (Parra). The candidates are Dayanand Mandrekar 
(BJP), Manguesh K Kaskar (BJP), Francis Fernandes (Cong), Christopher 
Fonseca (CPI), Gokuldas S Naik (GCP), Albin Fernandes (Su-Raj), Sanjay G 
Narvekar (Ind), Jawaharlal Henriques (Ind) and Kalidas Verekar (Ind).

PHILIPINES CITY SEEKS CULTURAL EXCHANGE: The city of Vigan, in the 
Philipines, has recently approached Goa with a "twinning of cities" 
concept, involving not only a cultural but also a tourism exchange 
programme. The Ambassador for India in Manila has approached the Government 
of India, with a proposal that Goa draw up a Memorandum of Understanding 
with the city of Vigan in order to have an exchange programme. (H)

KRC, RAILTEL CORP SIGN MOU: A Memorandum of Understanding was signed 
between Konkan Railway Corpn Ltd and M/s RailTel Corpn of India Ltd, on May 
10, for utilizing dark fibre capacity available with Konkan Railway from 
Mumbai to Mangalore along its railway route. (NT)

CELESTIAL PHENOMENON TODAY: The evening sky, on May 14, within an hour of 
the sunset, will present the two-day old crescent of the Moon forming a 
beautiful grouping with the rest of the planets. The Association of Friends 
of Astronomy (Goa) has invited the public to the Public Astronomical 
Observatory, at Junta House, terrace, Panaji, to observe the phenomenon. (NT)

ROAD DEATH: Minguel Fernandes (64) from Sirlim, succumbed to head injuries 
when the scooter he was riding was knocked by a Maruti Zen driven by 
Giridhar Pednekar, at Sirlim yesterday.

GOA'S SALIL CONTINUES TO RULE: Abhimanyu Nityanand of Tamil Nadu made his 
maiden entry into the medals list yesterday, bagging a third place in Race 
3 of the International Optimist Junior National Sailing Championship, at 
Hawaii beach, Dona Paula. Otherwise, the results were much the same with 
Goa's Salil Sabir coming first and Tamil Nadu's Rohith Ashok coming second

MANDAR WINS STATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP: Mandar Tamhankar of Pednem won the 
State chess championship cum national 'B' selection tournament organised by 
the Goa State Chess Association. (GT)

CRIPPLIED KUTTIKAR TO SWIM: The crippled swimmer, Manguesh Kuttikar, will 
again attempt an unique feat, that of swimming blindfolded and hands tied 
behind, early today from Cabo (Raj Bhavan) to the Mandovi bridge (7.5 km). (GT)

ASSAGAO DOWN PANJIM FOOTBALLERS: Assagao Youth Club fought back from two 
goals down to edge out Panjim Footballer 6-5 via the tie-breaker in the St 
Savio Sports club's upper Soccer at Calangute ground.

FC SIOLIM PIP XETRAPAL: Hosts FC Siolim got the better of Xetrapal SC, 
Odxel, by a solitary second-half goal in the Siolim-Marna Panchayat Cup
