COLVALE PANCHAYAT MOOTS SAFEGUARDS: Conducting an Environment Impart 
Assessment prior to issuing approval for any industry, revocation of NOC to 
erring scrap dealers and a 'cattle only' pond were some of the safeguards 
mooted at a gramsabha of Colvale Panchayat. It was also resolved to make 
the approval of the gramsabha for any new project and environmental 
assessment mandatory in what could be a landmark suggestion. (GT)

MAUVIN CLAIMS CHARGESHEET IS POLITICALLY MOTIVATED: former Power minister 
and main accused in the multi-crore power scam, Mauvin Godinho, quoted 
scriptures while issuing a blunt and naked threat to Chief Minister Manohar 
Parrikar for falsely implicating him in the power scam and the 
disproportionate assets case. "As you sow, so shall you reap," he warned Mr 
Parrikar during a press conference in Panjim yesterday. (H)

LUXURY CARS FOR POLL OBSERVERS: Mitsubishi Lancers, Hyundai Accents, Fiat 
Palios, Fiat Siennas, Toyota Qualis, Maruti Zens, Esteems and Indicas will 
now be issued to observers and key personnel to oversee the election

SUICIDE CASE IN SADOLXEM: A Sadolxem resident, Constancio D'Silva (24), 
allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his house, 
the Canacona police said. (GT)

PANCHAYAT FOR VERODA? Joaquim Alemao, contesting on the Congress ticket in 
Cuncolim, has promised to give attention to the long-pending demand of 
Veroda for a Panchayat by appointing a special committee. (H)

CLOSURE OF BANASTARIM BRIDGE: Banastarim Bridge on NH-4A will remain closed 
for all vehicular traffic on 26 May from 6.30 am to 8.30 am for the purpose 
of inspection and recording of the deck levels. (GT)

BJP HOPES TO WIN 16 SEATS: The Bharatiya Janata Party leadership has 
written off its return to power in Goa in the upcoming election since after 
the Ravi Naik factor, as sources close to Union Minister Pramod Mahajan 
said the party may win at the most 16 seats in the 40-member Assembly. (H)

NERI, BRUNO SEEK NCP'S SUPPORT: Supporters and workers of Filipe Neri 
Rodrigues, independent candidate contesting in Velim constituency, have 
sought the support of National Congress Party president Dr Wilfred de 
Souza. Bruno Lourenco, contesting as an Independent candidate from Curtorim 
constituency is also likely to seek NCP's support. (GT)

SPECIAL MEET IN ANJUNA: The Vice-Postulator for the cause of Fr Agnelo, 
Pilar, will hold a convention on May 16, to commemorate the 75th death 
anniversary of Ven Fr Agnelo de Souza at St John Chapel, Gaumvaddi-Anjuna, 
at 4.30 pm. There will be a concelebration of the Holy Eucharist, blessing 
of the sick and a prayer for beautification of Fr Agnelo, to be followed by

BIRTH CENTENARY OF ARMANDO MENEZES: "The Cradle of My Dreams", a selection 
of writings of late Prof Armando Menezes, was released on May 11 by Ms 
Monika Menezes, to commemorate the birth centenary celebrations of late 
Menezes, at a special function held in Panjim. Prof Armando Menezes was 
born in San Mathias, Divar, on May 11, 1902, and was a teacher of English 
for nearly half a century. (NT)

GOA'S SOCIO-ECONOMIC INDICATORS: Goa has a very high literacy, including 
female literacy. Nationally, it has the highest per-capita income, the 
highest per capita bank deposit, the lowest level of poverty. Its 
camaraderie and integrity has made Goa the prominent favoured destination 
for both foreign and domestic tourists. On the liabilities side, the rate 
of growth shows signs of decline. Water is in short supply unemployment is 
increasing, productivity in agriculture, fisheries, horticulture is 
declining; pollution and environmental degradation are adversely affecting 
the scenic and pristine assets, the fiscal deficit is increasing, the 
quality of education shows signs of deterioration and there is a serious

DID STRESS LEAD TO PARALYSIS? Maina-Curtorim police inspector Uday Naik 
suffered a paralytic stroke last night. Just prior to announcing assembly 
election date police incharges were reshuffled and PI Bossuet D'Silva of 
Maina-Curtorim was replaced by PI Uday Naik, who was posted at Curchorem. 
Sources at the south Goa police district headquarters inform that the 
36-year-old Naik was under a lot of stress since his posting. (GT)

NIGERIANS BOOKED: Two NigeriansClifford Chikwuma and Dudowey Bemi 
Vaccherlinwere booked under the Foreigners Order Act and later released on 
bail, for overstaying in the country. (GT)

JET INTERNATIONAL GETS SALES AWARD: Jet International Travels & Tours, 
Margao, was awarded the Super Sales Award of Jet airways in the first 
position for their highest productivity for the year 2000-2001. (GT)

CONCESSIONS TO MAGICIANS: Speaking after inaugurating the two-day "Magic 
Karishma 2002" at Miramar Residency, Panjim, Pramod K Shetye, Managing 
Director of GTDC, assured that he would extend concessions to the magicians 
to the best possible extent by keeping tourism in view and the promotion of 
national integration. Over 400 magicians participated in the unique two-day 
convention held on 12 and 13 May. Bandy Shankar and Chand Pasha from Andhra 
Pradesh performed street magic shows. There were competitions for children

"NAVHIND' WINS SECOND GLOBAL AWARD IN 2002: "The Navhind Times" has won the 
International Quality Summit award for Excellence and Business Prestige in 
the Platinum Category, 2002, given by the Business Initiative Directions, 
Spain. This is the second international award won by "The Navhind Times" 
this year, the earlier one was given in January in Malaysia. (NT)

ROHIT'S SLIP GIVES CHAITANYA SILVER: A costly slip on the downwind leg of 
the loop caused Tamil Nadu Rohith Ashok's boat to get swamped, slowing him 
down in Race 6 of a regatta that continued to be dominated by Goa's Salil 
Sabir. Goa's Chaitanya Chowgule took full advantage to pass him and come 
second in a race for the first time in the championship. Another 
beneficiary, entering the medal tally for the first time, was Vishal 
D'Silva of Mumbai's Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), who stood fourth overall and 
third among boys in Race 6. The races were shifted to the morning today, in 
the hope of milder conditions, but there was little respite from the wind

FOOTBALL RESULTS: CRC Chinchinim defeated Friends XI Vaddem 7-6 via tie 
breaker to advance into the quarterfinals of St Savio Super Soccer, 
organised by St Savio Sports Club, Calangute. Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda, 
cruised into the semi-finals of Chinchinim Villagers Trophy football 
tournament when they quelled the challenge of United Club of Utorda 2-1. 
Nagdolim Boys defeated Zaino SC 1-0 in the SF Bros' 17th Velim interward 
football tournament at Pocklivoll. Batim Youth Club earned a place in the 
quarter-finals of Adarsh Yuvak Sangh's all Goa inter-village football 
tournament with a 4-2 scoreline via tie-breaker over Parish Youth of Morjim

GOA GIRLS LOSE: Uttaranchal scored a facile 32-06 victory over hosts Goa to 
become the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals in the girls 
section of the 53rd Servo Junior National Basketball Championships, in
