PRIME PORTFOLIOS FOR COALITION PARTNERS: The four ministers of coalition 
partnersMGP and UGDPbagged prime portfolios after their allocation by Chief 
Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. At the outset, each minister has been 
allotted one major portfolio and the second phase of allocation will take 
place after about eight days, according to Parrikar. The third phase, if 
any, will be done after 14 June 2002. It is learn that personal aptitude, 
educational background and individual knack of each minister has been taken 
into consideration before allocating various portfolios. (GT)

CONGRESS ANALYSING DEFEAT: Congress spokesman John Fernandes said the 
Congress Party had managed to secure 38 per cent of the mandate as compared 
to the BJP's 32 per cent in spite of its manipulations. "This indicates 
that people still believe in the Congress but secular parties in the fray 
had caused a split in the votes," he stated. (GT)

GOA BUDGET: The Goa government has recommended summoning of a three-day 
session of the State legislative assembly from June 12 to 14, for 
transacting the financial business of the State. (GT)

NO TRUST MOVE AGAINST MMC CHIEF FAILS: The no confidence motion moved 
against Mr Michael Carrasco, chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council, 
on May 28 by five councilors, collapsed yesterday. One of the signatories, 
Ms Farida D'Souza, withdrew her support to the no confidence motion. (NT)

1000 HSS STUDENTS IN TROUBLE: The fate of nearly 1,000 higher secondary 
students, whose results have been withheld, is hanging in the balance due 
to the delay on the part of the higher secondary institutions to submit the 
grades of certain subjects to the Goa Board. (GT)

AMBAULIM SARPANCH RESINGS: Dr Mahendra Bale, Sarpanch of Ambaulim village, 
sent his resignation yesterday. Dr Bale said that he was always for a clean 
administration and was unhappy over the behaviour of one of the panchas. (NT)

CHURCHILL BLAMES: In an exclusive interview to "Gomantak Times", former 
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said that money power, misuse of religion and 
rebellion within the Congress Party made him bite the dust at the hustings.

World Environment Day today, thin plastic bags still fly high in the air, 
bottles choke the gutters and plastic layer blocks the water from

MMC TO LAUNCH DRIVE AGAINST PLASTIC BAGS: The Margao Municipal Council has 
decided to launch a drive against the sale of plastic carry bags below 20 
microns in the markets from next month. (H)

MINOR GIRLS RESCUED: The Women's Police rescued two minor children from the 
residence of one Dr Anthony Lobo, of Dona Paula, where the police claim, 
the duo were being harassed. The rescue operation was carried out by 
officer in charge of the Women's Police Station, Maria Monserrate, in 
co-ordination with Ms Nishta Dessai of Child Rights, Ms Fiona Dias Saxena 
of Sangth and Maria Coelho of Childline. (H)

FATORPA RESIDENT HELD FOR TRESPASS: Vinesh Phaldessai was arrested by 
Cuncolim police for alleged trespass and damaged to a Maruti van belonging 
to Fatorpa sarpanch, Madhini Naik. (H)

PETROL PUMPS RUN DRY IN MARGAO: Most of the petrol pumps in Margao 
yesterday went dry as no supplies of petrol and diesel were made by the 
respective oil companies. On Monday long queues were witnessed at all the 
petrol pumps after the news that prices of petrol and diesel would be 
increasing following the surge in the international crude price from 
midnights of 3-4 June. (GT)

NO INTERNET RESULTS IN MANDREM: Power failure and dead phones deprived SSC 
students from Mandrem and adjoining villages of availing of the facility 
provided by Goa Board of secondary and Higher Secondary Education of making 
available SSC results on the Internet. (GT)

KBM AWARD: The Konkani Bhasha Mandal will award prize of Rs.400 titled as 
"Luizinho-Isaura Memorial Prize". Instituted by Maria Olivia Fernandes, who 
has donated a sum of Rs.5,000 to KBM. The prized will be awarded to the 
successful student obtaining highest marks in Konkani at SSC examination. 
Fernandes is a Konkani activist who had worked dedicatedly for the Konkani 
daily "Novem Goem". (GT)
