To quote the /other/ BoG (Book of Genesis):
In the beginning, there was Perl, and Perl was good. But the
Script Kiddy in the Garden went to the hacker and said unto the
hacker 'lookee there, you could shave one character by removing
the semi-colon at the end'. And the hacker was tempted,
and felt. Thus Perl Golf was born.
And the hacker went to the Fun With Perl Mailing List and urged
its crowd to shave a few bits off the script of knowledge. The
crowd refused and said unto the hacker "Perlstyle has explicitly
forbidden not to use my's and strict. If we do not listen
to it, we will surely get warnings." The hacker called the
crowd wussies, and because the crowd knew hubris, the crowd felt.
A great Santa tournament was held, with much rejoicing and
merriment.
But, lo and behold, the bearded authority of the original
Mailing List came unto the cavorting crowd and said
"what's the matter with y'all?". And the crowd said unto
the bearded authority "we are having fun with Perl".
And the bearded authority said unto the crowd. "I can
see that. Scram." And because the bearded authority
did have a beard, and did possess authority, the
crowd scrameth.
And the crowd was driven out of the Garden and afflicted with
all kind of curses like exploding eyes and the such. For 30
cpu cycles it wandered, living off man pages, until it found
the promised Mailing List. And then began a bout of
serious begotting. Perl Golf already begat the Santa tournament,
which in turn begat the PGAS and TPR($i,$j) tournaments, which
in turn begat the BoG, which in turn begat the Perlgolf Map.
The PGAS also kind of begat the LA tribe's tournaments.
Hope this answers your question. :)

Members are supposed to be members of LA.pm, z'I think.
And since you seem to be based in the UK, this is indeed
a wee bit strange...
