Sorry to disappoint you; your 64 doesn't work on my machine:
Perl 5.8.0, Linux 2.4.18 (RedHat 8), Pentium.

Viewing from your source, I'd say it should work - the empty statement
should just return empty string, and exit code 0 - but 
$ perl -le '``;print $/'
gives 256.

Can someone explain?
