The LocalSearch API was deprecated in November 2010. Per Google's official deprecation policy, they will maintain the API (where maintain = keep it running) as long as it is economically convenient for 3 years from that date. Even the Local Search API does not guarantee that its results will be consistent with a maps.google.com search, though.
The supposed successor to the Local Search API is the Places API, which was released to the general masses at IO this year.
