This is by design, and for a number of reasons. The first is performance: the API can run a lot faster when it doesn't have to make a round trip to the feed's server and parse and normalize the feed every time before it returns a response. And the second is resources. Simply put, popular feeds could foreseeably be overwhelmed by the volume of requests and bandwidth.
