G'day, Some of you may have seen this already but I wanted to personally extend an invitation to get involved with a community-driven process to define what exactly "open cloud" means and then protect that term as "open source" is protected.
Our work so far has coalesced around four main points: - Open APIs - e.g. Atom[Pub] - Open Formats - e.g. OpenDocument Format (ODF) - Open Data (optional) - e.g. Amazon Public Data Sets - Open Source (optional) - e.g. Hadoop Here's some starting points: - Official site: http://www.opencloudinitiative.org/ - Wiki: http://wiki.opencloudinitiative.org/ - Group: http://groups.google.com/group/open-cloud Thanks! *AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY RE: "OPEN CLOUD"* > > I write this letter in order to be 100% transparent with you about a new > initiative that could prove critical to the development of computing and the > Internet: the protection of the term “Open Cloud” with a certification > trademark (like British Standards’ > Kitemark®<http://www.bsi-global.com/en/ProductServices/About-Kitemark/>and the > FAIRTRADE<http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/what_is_fairtrade/fairtrade_certification_and_the_fairtrade_mark/default.aspx>symbol) > as well as its definition via an open community consensus process. > > Cloud computing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing> users will > soon be able to rest assured that offerings bearing the “Open Cloud” brand > are indeed “open” in that critical freedoms (such as the right to access > one’s own data in an open format via an open interface) are strongly > protected.
