Thanks a lot - looks good now. Others: We were able to mitigate the issue by forcing our (AWS US-EAST hosted) app to query one of Google's EU endpoints by putting in /etc/hosts: 173.194.41.233 chart.apis.google.com
Obviously not really recommended; and significantly increases latency. But it worked.
