Finally able to get back to this (I *was* able to commit from home
over the weekend, though, which helped). The latest version of git
does give different (although not entirely more helpful!) errors.

Anyway, it's solved, although I'm still puzzled.

Using the 'grump' project in the same manner worked OK.

Updating the password in my .netrc with a cut-and-paste of the correct
password (which was visually identical) cured the muddle problem. The
'grump' project still continues to work.

So some non-visible change in the password in the .netrc file may be
to blame, although I can't quite see how. Chalk it up to weird
experience.
