Have a look at the API documentation on http://code.google.com/apis/desktop/docs/queryapi.html The query API can be used either directly in native C++ code or though the http/xml API.
I'm not sure if the C++ API is available for all platforms. The HTTP/ XML Api probably has a better chance of being supported on all platforms.
