Gravatar URLs in the format of this:
http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/3b3be63a4c2a439b013787725dfce802

...are just requests for images that may or may not exist. The idea
behind a gravatar image is that the site (or gadget) displaying it
doesn't get to know whether or not you actually have a gravatar image
to display -- they just try to display it if they can. This URL is
unique to an email address, so any site with your email address can
ask for your Gravatar, but any site with *anyone's* email address can
ask for theirs. So anyone adding a gadget or visiting a blog that uses
gravatars will get at least one such request per user displayed with
an avatar image. In blogs, this often means that there will be one
gravatar request per comment on any page you visit.

As a web designer, you should be expected to visit a number of blogs
that will make calls to gravatar.com. For example, all of these pages
make many calls to gravatar.com, but are very reasonable for a web
designer to read:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08/23/50-useful-new-jquery-techniques/
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/08/24/tweetphoto-iphone-app-rejected-because-logo-resembles-polaroid-shot/
http://nicewebtype.com/notes/2009/04/23/css-font-stacks/
http://www.uxbydesign.org/2009/07/15/5-common-usability-testing-mistakes-to-avoid/

Techcrunch pages also make calls to Meebo (chat/social network) and
Tweetmeme (Twitter API interface). Any site that uses Facebook Connect
for their comment system will also be making calls to
http://www.facebook.com/extern/login_status.php
even if you are not a facebook member (much less logged in). I got
this list by pulling 6 of the first web design-related links from my
"to read" list -- essentially, 66% of related blogs!

If the company fired you for doing your job and keeping up on the
current design trends and techniques, then I suggest you start your
own business -- soon they will be in a position where all their web
stuff is crap and outdated, their in-house staff has been thoroughly
de-brained, and you are not only familiar with their systems but on
top of the trends. You can sell your work to them at four times the
rate you get as an employee.
