There's nothing to contact them about. It's a good idea that they are
using gravatar. It's such a good idea that 2/3 of the sites I sampled
use it. Visiting any one of them will cause your browser to call
gravatar images.
The problem (as you pointed out) is with your IT dept misunderstanding
the nature of your "use" of gravatar. Flagging you for "using"
gravatar because it can be a social network makes as much sense as
flagging you for "using" JPEGs because they might be porn. You won't
get very far on the web without using JPEGs, and you can't read much
about web design without hitting gravatar.com. It seems to me that
they are accusing you of doing your job.
